Located in the former Dupuy-d'Angeac mansion, a family of merchants, the MAH offers a collection of collections based on the history of the Cognac area, as well as a fine arts trail based on the collections of the merchant families. A plunge into their intimacy.
While the ground floor exhibits archaeological collections from the prehistoric deposits of the Cognac region with an astonishing Neolithic pirogue found in the Charente, the first floor reveals collections that are distinguished by a remarkable set of paintings from the Northern Schools, testimony to the historical links between the Charente and the Netherlands.
It also presents a collection of decorative art objects, mainly in the Art Nouveau style, consisting of creations by Émile Gallé, a friend of the glassmaker Claude Boucher from Cognac, Daum and René Lalique. An important collection of paintings from Saintonge completes this tour.
Equipped in July 2020 with six virtual reality experiments, these routes evoke with modernity what the territory was like at various times. Dinosaurs, the Neolithic, Romanesque, Renaissance, the barges that sailed at full speed on the Charente and the development of the famous nectar of the gods are the six themes virtually presented. A state-of-the-art technicality in which the past is combined with the present and in constant dialogue with the future.
At the Museum of Art and History (MAH), discover 2 historical periods:
The time of the dinosaurs (-140 million years before our era): The virtual traveller is projected to the Cretaceous period, in the heart of an archipelago that will become, much later, the European continent. Angeac-Charente does not yet exist, it is then a lagoon.
The Neolithic (- 2590 BC): The traveller is propelled into a Neolithic settlement area. He is invited to observe farmer-breeders who used to live along the river. They then use the river to move around and communicate with their neighbours.
Duration of each experiment (2 historical periods in a row): 15 minutes. They must be booked by telephone before your visit to the museum to ensure the availability of helmets at the time of the visit.
The Museum of Art and History opens onto the beautiful public garden of the town hall, created at the end of the 19th century by Édouard André and listed in 1943. In 1925, the MAH moved into the elegant former private mansion of a cognac merchant built in 1838 for the Dupuy d'Angeac family. The old-fashioned charm of this building is an unequivocal reminder of the glory days of Cognac, when its eaux-de-vie were exported far beyond the borders at the end of the 19th century, thus contributing to the fame of the eponymous town.
Pass with admission to the Cognac Art Museum and the Museum of Art and History on self-guided tour + the 3 Virtual Travellers experiences (6 historical periods): 10 euros.
Valid for 1 year.
Single entry to one of the two museums and free visit + the Voyageurs du virtuel experience(s) of the museum visited (1 experience with 2 historical periods at the MAH or 2 experiences with 4 historical periods at the MACO): 6 euros.
