Flow Vélo – step 6 : Châteauneuf – Saint Yrieix sur Charente

Description

The Flow Vélo® itinerary between Châteauneuf and Angoulême alternates between the left and right banks of the Charente River. 2 km from the centre of Châteauneuf, the "bain des Dames" is a pleasant sandy beach located opposite Île Mattard and very close to the cycle route. Continue in the direction of the village of Mosnac which has a dozen 19th century farms and several 16th century dwellings.

Cross the river Charente to Saint-Simeux. From the bridge, admire the view of the church which dominates the valley, the old eel fishery and the watermill. A great opportunity to take a picture worthy of a postcard! Saint-Simeux rises to an altitude of 80 metres, but the Flow Vélo® runs at the foot of the village, where water mills and river transport once constituted the main economy of the commune.

Further on, in the village of Trois-Palis, let yourself be tempted by a visit to the Letuffe chocolate factory. This artisanal chocolate factory is the most famous in Charente! You will find there the famous Marguerite d'Angoulême (orange-flavoured chocolate) and other specialities such as Charentaise truffandines or guinettes (cherries with cognac).

Once you have passed the loop of the Charente at Fléac, you arrive in Angoulême, City of art and history and capital of comic books. The route will take you straight to the City of Comics and Images, proudly guarded by Corto Maltese. Opposite, the Paper Museum bears witness to the activity of Angoulême's paper craftsmen from the Middle Ages to the 17th century.

Situated in the heart of the Charente vineyards, Châteauneuf stretches essentially on the left bank of the Charente. Crossing the bridge over the river, the Ile de la Fuie on the right is a group of four islets accessible by a footbridge.

In the centre of the town, the church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens has a beautiful Romanesque façade inspired by the cathedral of Angoulême. Between the church and the town hall with its neo-classical architecture, the old streets are lined with private mansions (15th century Berdeville's dwelling) and old shop windows.
